Portrait of Dorian Gray is based on Oscar Wilde’s classic novel about a charming young man, so spellbound by his own beautiful portrait that he utters a fateful wish to remain young forever while the portrait ages. His wish is granted and his lustful pursuit for power and pleasure is reflected in the portrait as it grows more ugly and hideous.
Over the next 18 years he causes the suicide of a young actress he was engaged to, corrupts many people in English society and kills the painter of the portrait. Eventually he is so haunted by the past that he decides to destroy the now grotesque portrait which reverts to its original beautiful form overlooking a horribly wrinkled old man with a knife in his chest.
Truly a feast for the senses, this show is almost completely sung with lush music and songs skilfully woven around flamboyant wit to yield an enthralling passionate tale of romance, torment and despair.
